Much like a tireless clockmaker, I've spent the better part of four decades tinkering with the inner workings of my own being. Stoicism, that often-misunderstood philosophy, formed the bedrock of this pursuit long before it became fashionable. It's a philosophy as relevant in the bustling marketplace of modern life as it was in the ancient agora. Imagine, if you will, a world where children are equipped not only with the tools of literacy and mathematics but also with the wisdom to navigate the vicissitudes of life with equanimity and reason.
My own journey has been as varied as a well-stocked library. From the depths of psychology to the starry expanses of physics, I've delved into a multitude of subjects, amassing four degrees along the way. Even before the term "ultralearning" graced the pages of self-help manuals, I devoured books with the insatiable appetite of a bookworm on a candy binge (one a day, at my peak!). This insatiable curiosity propelled me not only to the hallowed halls of a world-renowned university but also to the path of a scientist, and on other explorations as well.
Yet, for all my intellectual pursuits, I once found myself shackled by the twin demons of perfectionism and a fixed mindset. It took a conscious effort, a deliberate shift towards a growth mindset, to break free from these self-imposed limitations.
Life, I believe, is a tapestry woven from diverse threads. My own tapestry boasts the vibrant hues of a foreign language mastered and a new life built far from my native shores. Over two decades spent abroad have exposed me to a kaleidoscope of cultures and perspectives, enriching my understanding of the world in ways I could never have imagined.
Self-improvement, a relentless pursuit of "better," is the guiding principle of my life. Introspection, that inward gaze, serves as my compass. Kaizen, the philosophy of continuous improvement, fuels my steps. Every change, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is a brick laid on the path to a better self.
The world, I believe, stands at a precipice. We have the potential to usher in a Star Trek-like utopia, a world steeped in reason and abundance. Imagine, if you will, a world where resources are shared freely, where disease withers in the face of scientific progress, and the very fabric of aging itself is unraveled. These possibilities, once relegated to the realm of science fiction, are now tantalisingly close. Yet, the path forward is fraught with danger. Should we succumb to our baser instincts, the very future we strive for could crumble into dust.
This blog is my attempt to share the lessons learned on this curious journey, a space for the exchange of ideas with kindred spirits who, like me, believe in the power of reason, self-improvement, and the potential for a brighter future for all. Let us, together, embark on this shared odyssey, one informed by evidence and a deep-seated desire to leave the world a better place than we found it, or perhaps, transcend the limitations of the human experience altogether.
Thus starts my blog.
